Silva On The Radar

The Mariners are close to bolstering their weak, but steady rotation.

Carlos Silva, 28, is mulling over his contract offer by the Mariners; the contract is reported to be 4 years worth $44 million. Over the past 3 seasons he has a 2-1 record at Safeco Field, and has won 3 of his 4 career decisions against the Angels. In the past 4 seasons he is 47-45.

In 2007 he was 13-14 with a 4.19 ERA.

The man can also log the innings; he has pitched in at least 180 innings in each of the last 4 years.

This potential signing would not hinder our talks with Bedard, and we are still pursueing Bedard as far as we all know.

I am 100% okay with this, seeing how we don't lose any prospects, and just use the Kuroda money on Silva. This is really a low risk move as far as I can tell.

If you don't see eye-to-eye with me, feel free to leave a comment.

The risk I see is the money. 11 mil/year? Maybe more like 7-8 mil/year and it would be peachy to me.

obviously with the market that ain't gonna happen, and if we want to land a free agent pitcher that is how much we are going to have to pay, and Silva is the best free agent pitcher out there.

it's not like we're short on cash. before the time silva's contract is through we'll be out of heavy contracts like Sexson, Beltre, Washburn, Batista and Vidro's, to name a couple.

This doesn't help us much, but Bavasi needs a sure thing right now. I'm not bummed out either, especially since he'll probably be no better than Kuroda.

I meant to say "especially since Kuroda will be no better than him"..

i think you got it, though.

Let's face it, 11 million a year is ridiculous for a fairly average pitcher, but they have to do something. It's better than just handing Ramirez a spot in the rotation.

Atleast this should be the end of Horacio "Oh No!" Ramirez in the starting rotation...Who knows he could end up being a under the radar good signing like Batista was last year...Silva's career numbers are actually pretty above average...If we can somehow pull off this signing AND trade for Bedard I think the Mariners will be a in a great position to compete for the West...This move, however, probably makes us less likely to bet the farm on a Bedard trade...

Boy I hope you're right here.

Quinn: I hope so too...I just don't think Bedard is worth what the O's are asking right now...He's not worth as much as Santana yet the O's are asking for more...
