Time to Get Well(s)?

All indications are that the Padres are on the brink of either trading or releasing David Wells after four consecutive bashings that Wells took on the mound, giving up an MLB record tying ten hits in a row to the Cardinals in the latest beating. With the Mariners in need of a starting pitcher, Wells seemingly wanting to stay on the west coast, and the numerous trades between the two clubs over the last few years, it seems like a perfect match. Wells numbers this year aren't great, but they are still better than Hor Ram's. In 22 games started, "Boomer" Wells is 5-8 with a 5.54 era and nearly a 2:1 strikeout to walk ratio. Time to make some 07 comparisons.

ERA:

Wells: 5.54
Ramirez: 6.68
Weaver: 6.20

WHIP:

Wells: 1.59
Ramirez: 1.84
Weaver: 1.62

Quality Starts (6.0 innings or more, 3 ER or less) / Total Starts

Wells: 9 / 22 (.409)
Ramirez: 6 / 12 (.500)
Weaver: 6 / 17 (.353)

K:BB

Wells: 63:33 (1.91 K's per BB)
Ramirez: 25:24 (1.04 K per BB)
Weaver: 46:24 (1.92 K's per BB)

I really don't know what to think, but Wells is only making 3 million dollars this year on a 1 year contract. Is he worth a prospect? Possibly.

I'd be willing to take a flier on this guy. He's run into some bad luck his last 4 starts, so he should come cheap, though the switch from NL to AL will hurt him.

He's better than Ho, though.

Hey what happened to your other blog? I don't care about the mariners. But were did Brittany go?

Simply said, no... The guy pitchers in a offensive inferior league. Their real offense on the NL West is the Rockies, and I don't know how he's done against them. I'll stick with Weaver and HoRam over washed up Wells, and Patrick you know how much that would take for me to say. He also pitchers in the MOST pitcher friendly park in the MLB, which favors lefties. I know I preach how pitcher friendly Safeco is, but Safeco Field is bologna and Petco Park is steak. That's the difference.

I'll pass on Wells...

If it's one of our lesser prospects he might be worth it...However I'm apprehensive for a lot of the reasons that Dustin said...Petco is the mecca of pitchers parks...His numbers still aren't that great considering he gets to pitch approximately half his games where two young pitchers have suddenly become two of the best in the league...Personally I just think he is too damn old to take a chance on...He's just be one more guy to be apprehensive about when he steps on the bump...I already get enough of that with Hor"ror film" Ramirez and Jeff "Chinese not American Dream" Weaver...

I present these stats:

Wells: 4.85 FIP, 4.78 xFIP
Ramirez: 5.22 FIP, 5.42 xFIP

Wells is the better pitcher when you take everything into account (the defense behind him, the park he pitches in, the league he pitches in) and it's not particularly close. Wells' peripheral stats show him to be an average pitcher. Ramirez is edging toward "replacement level".
