So, Bill Bavasi goes out and picks up veteran IF Miguel Cairo. This was reported all around the Mariner blogosphere and stuff a few days ago, but this is a different sort of venting.
Now, maybe I'm missing something. Is Cairo freed up to HGH or something?
Okay, okay, I know. It IS a move, and we've all been pushing for SOMETHING. This is really random though. He's pretty much a tool to make Jose Lopez and Willie work for their time. This said, this isn't something you just go out and do. This just seems like something you'd do for your Kindergartners. Bring in a smart kid to make the other kids show off.
Now, it's not all bad. He's cheap. There's low expectations. Nothing at stake or anything.
I'll just sit on my criticisms for now.
I'll also throw in some Dustin bit...
*Presses post, and proceeds to dream about the all the reports "just kidding" about the Bedard trade for George, Triunfel, and Adam*

I'm neutral on this move...It's not like he's going to hurt our team...If he doesn't perform..DFA...
And personally I like the possible Bedard deal..The fans have been complaining all offseason about Bavasi's inability to make a trade for a front of the rotation arm, and then when he finally might have a move in place people complain about what he are giving up...Here is a simple fact: You have to give something to get something...I'd prefer we keep Jones and Trunfiel too but am willing to say goodbye to them if it means we have a rotation that will put us in a position to compete next year...
I think this movie is making Lopez tradeable. The Orioles are on the verge of moving Roberts to the NL. This would give them an MLB ready 2nd baseman who is cheap, underperforms for the most part, and we don't have a hole to further fill.
His career numbers are better than Lopez's also...

That's a crazy ass trade (in a bad way) if so.
Quinn: How is that a bad trade?...If we can get an assurance that Bedard will resign then it finally gives us a rotation that can compete...This also allows us to keep Morrow, Wlad and Clement...Like I said to get something you have to give something...I hope your not one of the people whose been heavily criticizing Bavasi for his lack of activity when it comes to acquiring starting pitching...
totally agree with that last comment, brian. i have been largely against trading bedard because of the price, but if we can keep a majority of our major league ready prospect than why not? i think bavasi actually negotiated a nice deal (should this happen), considering originally it sounded like we were going to have to give up Jones/Clement and Morrow or something along those lines. Maybe Triunfel is better than ALL of them, but he won't be ready til 2010 at the very latest, enough time to develop some more youths.
Yes, Dustin, we've talked about this. Adam Jones either will flop, or not pan out like he was talked up to last year.
The fact is though, you have to draw the line somewhere. Okay, Adam is expendable. We have OFs ready to come up (WLAD!), but what about George? You can't tell me you didn't like George. He was the perfect set-up, and had the ability to go the extra 9th, or the extra 1/3 of it.
AND Triunfel? Adam (shippable), George (Amazing, limited expendability), and Triunfel (Young, room to grow, but talked up and really should be held onto.)
In a roundabout way of saying it, the advantage of this trade is the expendability we're selling, and the rarity that they're sending. That I can't ignore.
At some point you either build for the future and go with all your young guys and hope they all develop to their full potential...or put together a roster that is going to compete now...So basically the Mariners can either make this trade and try to compete for the next couple of seasons or go young and hope everything works out...Personally I don't want to wait another three seasons before the Mariners are good so I'll take our chances of trading for Bedard and trying to compete now with a good rotation and still hoping that Clement, Morrow, Wlad, Garcia, Betancourt, and Lopez all develop to their full potential...In short I think we need to make this move to compete and we still get to keep enough young talent to build for the future...
Everyone acts like Seattle has a small payroll like we're the Royals or Rays or something. We have a big payroll, and we should be doing this like the Red Sox are.
They are big spenders. They bring in big free agents. They traded Hanley Ramirez and others for Josh Beckett and Mike Lowell, but they still are able to produce some impact prospects. Pedroia, Papelbon, Ellsbury, Buchholz etc..
We can trade Jones and other top guys but still develope Wlad, Morrow, Clement on our current team while still trying to win.
I know as well or better than anyone that we have deep pockets, though deep pockets don't constitute expensive and living-in-moment trades.
And no, I'm not one who criticizes Bavasi for lack of movement for SP, I do though, criticize Bavasi for spending and trading with not great skill.
We have a very enabling ownership, ready to pay big money for big players, but, for some reason, we pay big money for NOT big players. And by NOT big players, I mean names that are NOT GOING to be big players.
We all want something big next year, but we don't need to bet the farm (pun intended) for it. We're at a crux, go one way or the other.
Adam Jones was pulled from his VWL team. He's not injured.
Could this possibly mean a trade is near?
How does signing Miguel Cairo make Lopez tradeable? We'd be better off shoving Bloomquist in at second base- neither of them can hit but Bloomquist is probably a better defender.
Also, am I missing something obvious? Why do the Orioles want Lopez when they have Brian Roberts?
If the M's are so serious about doing something this year that they're willing to chuck in Truinfel (who may turn out to have all-star skill) as a balancer, they better do a heck or a lot more than just adding Bedard.
